The challenge

Royal Borough of Kingston (the Council) wanted to create a user-friendly guide for the residents of Cambridge Road Estate to communicate some important information about their housing.

The Council had moved past the consultation phase of their development process, and a vote had been passed to rebuild the CRE residents’ homes from the ground up. This meant the tenants would need to temporarily move out of their homes. This booklet was to explain the process for each of the four tenures on the estate and how they would be affected.

The previous version of this document had been criticised for sounding too salesy and looking like an advertisement, so this document needed to be resident-focused, informative and accessible.

The client needed print and accessible digital versions of the booklet.

The challenge

The solution

Our approach was to bring the content to life by adopting a positive tone and highlighting the personal approach the Council were taking in moving the plan forward.

We suggested introducing a colour-coded tabbing system, with the colours representing the different types of tenure, to allow ease of navigation and help the residents quickly identify what information was relevant to them.

As this was a particularly copy heavy document, we used iconography to convey key information. We produced visually accessible documents for both print and digital use.

The impact

The client was very happy with the finished result and approached us with a subsequent piece of work, which was to create a tenure specific document for the CRE.

+1

Before starting on the design of the booklet, we worked closely with the client to reorder the content into a more logical reading order. This showed our willingness to commit to ensuring the document was fully accessible from the very start of the project.
